Hidden Pockets first workshop on HIV and AIDS and Photography.
(In collaboration with Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR), ICW, CYWAG, and More Than Our Status: Do You See HIV? )
A ‘workshop for young HIV positive girls’ brings to mind usual talks or discussion sessions. The team at Hidden Pockets decided to do something different, something more hands-on – a photography workshop.
The basic idea behind this particular photography workshop was to hand over the ‘gaze’, the ‘looking apparatus’ i.e. the camera, to the girls who are always being ‘looked at’; to challenge the stigma by reverting the gaze. How they look at themselves and the world, how they react to stepping back and observing their own lives through the camera etc are a few areas this workshop wants to explore.
The attempt therefore was to see the world through their lenses, through their perspective.
